The Nikon CoolPix S8100 is an outstanding compact mega zoom camera. The S8100 was an upgrade to Nikon’s S8000. Although the megapixel count has dropped from 14 megapixels to 12.1 megapixels you won’t notice the difference. The 10x optical zoom remains the same between the two cameras. The Lens is the equivalent to a 30-300 mm lens.

A new upgrade to the S8100 is the BSI (backside illuminated) CMOS sensor. The BSI CMOS sensor will allow more light into the diode therefore the camera should be able to take pictures in lower light levels. This great indoor photo capable camera with fast shutter speed and camera responsiveness is also very fast.

It is compact at 4.1 x 2.4 x 1.2 inches, the S8100 is just the right size for a compact camera. It is small enough to fit your shirt pocket, yet large enough to hold in your hand comfortably. It also has a very sharp and clear three-inch LCD display on the back. The controls are incredibly easy to use and simple to figure out. The camera has a small telescoping lens which shows a small amount of distortion when it reaches it maximum zoom, though that is a common problem with most telescoping lenses.

You can take very clear pictures because the camera uses two different strategies to deal with stabilization. It has both optical and digital stabilization. The camera also has a macro setting that is great. It was amazing to see how close you could get and the fine level of detail picked up by the camera. The S8100 offers a full range of ISO settings. It offers both manual setups from 160 to 3200 along with auto settings for those less inclined to play around. Reported to be the best around 200 on the ISO range.

You can take both JPEG and .MOV videos. The pictures are recorded at 4000 x 3000 pixels, while video is recorded at 1080p at 30 frames a second. The videos are ok on this camera but a dedicated video camera would be better.

The CoolPix S8100 makes a great buy running between $250 and $300. You really get a very nice camera at this price. Customers and professionals alike are giving the CoolPix S8100 two thumbs up.
